Job Summary

The Assistant Coordinator will work closely with the Coordinator to implement and monitor appropriate pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical functions to assure validity of microbiology test results and chain of custody of specimens.

Specific Duties / Responsibilities

  • Assist with designing and implementation of appropriate policies and procedures for laboratory testing.
  • Assist in the development of surveillance manuals including training of SOPs and bench aids.
  • Assist with training and mentorship of laboratory staff in test procedures and Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Provide expertise in troubleshooting general laboratory problems and specific assay problems.
  • Assist in monitoring external proficiency testing, from receipt to testing, to the final reporting of results. Ensure timely submission of test results by sentinel site laboratories.
  • Assist to investigate and respond to any deficiencies related to internal QC and external quality assurance (EQA).
  • Assist with monitoring of QC testing of 5% of pathogens isolated from sentinel site laboratories at the Central Veterinary Lab (CVL).
  • Assist the laboratories to summarize the monthly pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical problems.
  • Respond to technical and logistical problems encountered in the sentinel laboratories in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Coordinate with sentinel sites to ensure strict conducting of surveillance procedures by adhering to approved protocols/SOPs.
  • Assist in the supervision of improvement works occurring in the surveillance sites.
  • Ensure economic and prudent use of grant resources.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelors or master’s degree in veterinary health-related field
  • At least four years’ research and microbiology laboratory experience
