COVID-19 in pregnancy

Presented by Brenna L. Hughes, MD, MSc. Hughes serves as chief of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine and Vice Chair for Quality and Obstetrics at Duke University. She joined Duke in 2016 from Brown University and Women & Infants Hospital in Providence, R.I., where she was associate professor, director of the maternal fetal medicine fellowship, and director of women’s infectious diseases consultation.

During her training, Hughes completed dual fellowships at Magee-Womens Hospital at the University of Pittsburgh in maternal fetal medicine and reproductive infectious diseases. She earned a master of science degree in clinical research at that time. She was a scholar for the Brown NICHD K12 Career Development award in women’s reproductive health research. She then obtained an individual K23 award focused on examining the impact of pregnancy on the risk of HIV acquisition; she was awarded a Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine Excellence in Research award for this work. She has served as the alternate principal investigator for Brown University’s Maternal Fetal Medicine Units site, participating in all trials run by the Clinical Trials Network and serving as principal investigator for two major randomized clinical trials aimed at prevention of congenital cytomegalovirus infection with funding from NICHD and CDC, respectively.

Hughes is currently a co-PI and site PI for numerous clinical trials and observational studies. She has over 80 peer-reviewed publications. She has served on the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine Publications Committee as well as the Practice Bulletin Committee for Obstetrics for the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and on numerous study sections for the NIH and CDC. She is a member of the COVID task forces for ACOG and SMFM and serves on the NIH COVID treatment guidelines panel.
