Benjamin Chi, MD

Nurturing future global health leaders is crucial to building resilient and sustainable health systems. The Office of Fellowship and Training Programs provides robust clinical and non-clinical experiences for professional and personal growth, led by Benjamin Chi, MD, MSc, the Institute’s Associate Director of Fellowship Programs.

“Mentorship and training are pivotal parts of UNC’s global health vision. Trainees from both domestic and international settings alike have something to gain through equitable partnerships,” said Chi. “The Institute, through numerous training initiatives, offers essential field experience and other career development opportunities. Through these formal programs, we look to equip early-stage researchers with the skills they need to succeed.”

Through the Institute’s global sites, mentees have opportunities to follow independent tracks with structured pathways that achieve the greatest impact. This year 39 new trainees, scholars, and fellows were appointed across 10 training programs, bringing the total number of currently active trainees to 90 across all training categories. New leadership transitions will also ensure the continued success of global health training.

New Program Directors

Dr. Arlene Seña will become the new program director for the STI/HIV T32 Program, previously led by Dr. Ada Adimora. Under Dr. Adimora’s leadership over the past seven years, the program trained a collective 24 predoctoral scholars and 17 postdoctoral fellows. It was also successfully renewed in 2020.

For the ID Fellowship, Dr. Christopher Sellers, an alumnus, has assumed the role of program director, which was previously led by Dr. Michele Floris-Moore. Under her leadership, the ID Fellowship trained 24 physicians, most of whom have continued in research related careers as faculty at UNC and other academic institutions. She also secured UNC’s designation as an ID/EIS training site, and the subsequent hiring of the first ID/EIS fellow in 2024.

“We thank both Dr. Adimora and Dr. Floris-Moore for their commitment to fellowship training, and we are confident these program will continue to be successful under new leadership,” Chi said.
