Safe and effective options for pre-exposure prophylactics (PrEP) are needed to prevent HIV. HPTN 083 was a double-blinded randomized controlled trial that evaluated the safety and effectiveness of long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB LA) compared to daily oral tablets of TDF/FTC among cis-gender men who have sex with men and transgender women. Vietnam was one of 43 sites globally. CAB LA was superior to daily oral TDF/FTC for PrEP in preventing HIV infections among participants enrolled in the study.

Quality of Tuberculosis Services Assessments (QTSA) (2023)
Tuberculosis (TB) is the tenth leading cause of death globally; improving the quality of care in TB services can contribute to better TB patient health outcomes. The QTSA is a facility-based assessment conducted in multiple countries, including Vietnam, to evaluate the quality of TB services in randomly selected health facilities. The findings can assist policy makers, program managers, and service providers to strengthen the quality of TB services.
Genomic epidemiology of Treponema pallidum strains infecting women and men in low- and middle-income countries to inform syphilis vaccine development (2021-2022)
The purpose of this research study is to understand the differences in syphilis strains worldwide that will be important to future vaccine development. We collected biological specimens from syphilis patients in multiple sites across Asia, Africa, and South America to evaluate the causal pathogen (Treponema pallidum) and generate new genomic sequences. These sequences will be used to better understand global patterns of T. pallidum genomic diversity as well as inform future vaccine development.
Reducing Hazardous Alcohol Use and HIV Viral Load: An RCT in ART Clinics in Vietnam (REDART) (2016 – 2018)
People with HIV (PWH) who have unhealthy alcohol use tend to have worse HIV-related outcomes. In this randomized controlled trial, PWH with unhealthy alcohol use were randomized to standard of care, a brief alcohol intervention, or a combined intervention of motivational enhancement therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. The brief alcohol intervention, but not the combined intervention, improved viral suppression. Both interventions increased the number of days abstinent from alcohol.

HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) 074 (2015 – 2018)
HPTN 074 was conducted with people who inject drugs (PWID) in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Ukraine. PWID with HIV received either standard of care or an intervention including systems navigation and psychosocial counseling (SNaP). SNaP was designed to help PWID access and sustain antiretroviral therapy (ART). This short intervention improved ART use, viral suppression, and use of medications for opioid use disorder; it also reduced mortality.

Prevention for Positives: An RCT among Vietnamese PWID (2009 – 2015)
People who inject drugs (PWID) with HIV often face both HIV and substance use-related stigma in the community. This four-armed randomized controlled trial compares a multileveled individual and community stigma-reduction intervention to an individual counseling intervention alone, the community- based intervention alone and the standard of care. We enrolled 455 PWID with HIV from 32 communes in Thai Nguyen. The multilevel intervention reduced mortality and increased ART uptake.
