Title (doctoral project): A cross-sectional study of determinants of indoor environmental exposures and associated cardiopulmonary outcomes in households with and without chronic exposure to biomass fuel smoke

Project Objectives: To determine whether having a homemade chimney will reduce environmental exposure to PM and CO.

Title (postdoctoral project): Research to inform a comprehensive asthma management intervention in Lima, Peru

Project Objectives: Our goal is to examine the context surrounding asthma care and management for children and adolescents in peri-urban communities of Lima, Peru. We view the proposed project as the first step toward the development and delivery of a culturally-competent, multi-level asthma care intervention in these communities. Furthermore, we intend to use the results of this study as formative research for use in promoting compliance in a proposed vitamin D add-on intervention trial.

Aim 1: Examine lay understandings, practices and health-seeking behaviors regarding acute and chronic management of asthma in low-resource, peri-urban community settings in Lima, Peru.

Aim 2: Examine physician beliefs and practices regarding diagnosis and asthma management in low-resource, periurban community settings in Lima, Peru.

Aim 3: Understand the context-specific barriers and facilitators to treatment uptake and adherence at multiple levels of influence (individual, family, provider, health system).
