Title: Understanding the role of mental health on quality of life in people with COPD in Peru

Disease (COPD) in Peru

Project Objectives: The overall goal of this proposal is to characterize the impact of two mental health illnesses, depression and anxiety, on the lives of people with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and to understand how mental health support can be delivered within a peri-urban community in Lima, Peru. This proposal will leverage resources from a recently funded randomized trial focused on the implementation of a simple case-finding tool and self-management plan for COPD in low-middle-income countries (LMICs).

Aim 1: Estimate the prevalence of depression and anxiety, and determine which personal characteristics may be associated with depression and anxiety among Peruvian adults with COPD.

Aim 2: Assess the impact of depression and anxiety on quality of life among Peruvian adults with COPD.

Aim 3: Understand the perspectives of Peruvian adults and key informants (community health workers  (CHWs), health workers, medical personnel, family caregivers) regarding the relationship between COPD and depression / anxiety and facilitators and barriers to the delivery of mental health care for adults with COPD in this community.
