Title: Critical Care Services in Resource Poor Settings: Critical illness severity and outcomes including HIV prevalence in the ICU population

Project Objectives:

Aim 1: To prospectively evaluate the epidemiology of critical illness in a tertiary hospital in Malawi, including a cross-sectional assessment of the differential burden of critical illness in different hospital areas (e.g. ICU, Emergency Room, Surgery, Medicine, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics Wards)

Aim 2: To measure the prevalence and severity of HIV/AIDS in the ICU population, and to evaluate the characteristics and outcomes of AIDS-related critical illness,

Aim 3: To define clinical correlates of ICU- and hospital-mortality, including an assessment of the impact of ICU admission on hospital-mortality for patients in different hospital areas, and to use these data to evaluate the performance of established mortality prediction models (SAPS 3) within this population.
