Title: Incidence and timing of cancer among antiretroviral therapy initiators in Malawi.
Project Objectives:
The aims of the proposal support the objectives nested within the parent study: An HIV-cancer record linkage study using the Malawi National Cancer Registry
Hypothesis 1.1. The risk factors for HIV-associated cancer in Malawi are similar to those in resource-rich countries (age, immunosuppression, advanced WHO stage, lack of ART).
Hypothesis 1.2. Cancer risk will be higher among HIV-infected individuals in Malawi, even after effective immune reconstitution on ART, than for patients with similar characteristics in resource-rich settings.
Aim 1: To assess risk factors for newly diagnosed cancer among HIV-infected patients in Malawi using data from large longitudinal HIV patient cohorts and the MNCR
Hypothesis 2.1. 1- and 2-year survival will be poor (<50%) for this population, particularly when coupled with advanced HIV, even in the era of ART availability.
Aim 2: To measure survival among HIV-infected patients diagnosed with cancer in Malawi.
