About

Dr. Patterson is a neonatologist and implementation scientist with expertise in technology-based strategies to improve newborn mortality in low- and middle-income countries. Her particular research emphasis is on respiratory depression (i.e., failure to breathe at birth), and her primary work is in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). She led a clinical trial assessing the impact of a novel heart rate monitor called NeoBeat on the effectiveness of bag-mask ventilation during newborn resuscitation (Funding: Thrasher Early Career Award, Saving Lives at Birth Grand Challenge Grant, Laerdal Foundation Grant). She is also principal investigator for the development and evaluation of a mobile health application for newborn resuscitation called the Liveborn app. Co-developed by the University of North Carolina and Laerdal Global Health, Liveborn began as a research data collection tool that allows an observer to precisely document the timing of provider actions as well as the newborn’s respiratory status during a resuscitation. They have further developed the app into a clinical tool that provides real-time guidance and supports debriefing, and are evaluating this feedback functionality of Liveborn in a cluster randomized trial in the DRC (Funding: National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Phased Innovation Award). Finally, she is the principal investigator of Making Every Newborn Resuscitation a Learning Event, a program that seeks to establish a learning collaborative for newborn resuscitation with health facilities in the DRC, and to develop and evaluate innovative tools to support bedside learning (Funding: Laerdal Foundation Program Grant).
