Project Objectives:

Hypothesis: Community level interventions at primary referral centers for critically ill children can have a significant role in reducing the burden of childhood morbidity and mortality in SA.

Aim 1: Implement and evaluate a triage system, developed specifically for low resource clinical settings, to help PHC staff identify critically ill children.

Aim 2: Develop, implement and evaluate a severity assessment and treatment tool to assist PHC staff to assess and recognize severity for common pediatric conditions for PHC providers to use after initial triage for acutely ill cases to facilitate prompt and correct initial acute management.
