High Blood Pressure, Higher Stakes: Bridging Global Gaps in Hypertension Care

Abstract: Sub-Saharan Africa has a high prevalence of hypertension, yet awareness, treatment adherence, and control remain low. The emergency department (ED) may offer a unique opportunity to enhance screening, awareness, and linkage to care. We conducted a qualitative study among hypertensive ED patients and their healthcare providers to explore barriers to hypertension management. Using thematic analysis with an inductive approach within the framework method, we identified themes related to disease chronicity, provider communication, family support, and fear-based attitudes, along with structural barriers. These insights may inform the design of ED-based interventions to improve blood pressure control and strengthen linkage to outpatient services.
