CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Call for abstracts

The Malawi Cancer Consortium, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and UNC Project Malawi, is organizing the 4th Annual Malawi Cancer Symposium, which will take place from Monday 19th September to Tuesday 20th September 2022. The symposium will provide a platform for both local and international cancer research, care and advocacy stakeholders to exchange information, highlight strategic priorities and identify opportunities for collaboration, personal development, and training with the common goal of reducing the burden of cancer in Malawi. Therefore, the 4th Malawi Cancer Symposium (MCS), calls upon interested participants to submit abstracts to showcase their cancer-related work.

Scope

Risk factors, burden, surveillance, screening, diagnosis, treatment, outcomes and training in cancer, HIV or non HIV associated.

Timeline

Deadline for abstract submission: Monday, 15th August 2022

Notice of acceptance as oral/poster /booklet presentation for MCS 2022: Tuesday, 30th August 2022

Submission

Submit your abstract by sending it as a word document to ggomani@unclilongwe.org before 11.59pm CAT on Monday, 15th August 2022.

Award

All abstracts will be judged for scientific relevance, merit and language. Review and scoring will be performed by MCS Abstract Reviewers. Some abstracts will be selected for oral and poster presentations and all others will be published in the MCS booklet.

Structure

Structure the abstract into the following sections: Introduction, Methods, Results and Conclusion.

Title: The title should briefly and clearly indicate the nature of the abstract.

Authors: List the full first and last name of authors, annotated with a footnote for institutional affiliation (including city and country), who made a significant contribution to the abstract and the research. Highlight the name of the presenting author in bold letters.

Introduction: Indicate the purpose/objective of the research, the hypothesis that was tested or a description of the problem being analyzed or evaluated.

Methods: Describe the study period, setting, location, study design, study population, data collection and methods of analysis used.

Results: Clearly present the findings or outcome of the study. Please summarize any specific results.

Conclusions: Explain the significance of your findings or outcomes, and future implications or directions of the results. One simple table or figure may be included in the abstract. Give this figure an appropriate caption and refer to it in the abstract where adequate. References, credits or grant support should not be included.

Place abbreviations in parentheses immediately after the first mention of a term or phrase; the abbreviation can then be used throughout the abstract. Abstracts will be typeset from the text submitted by the author without copy editing changes, so keep the formatting of the text minimal.

Word limit: 500 words, excluding title, authors, and affiliations. Regardless of content, the table or figure counts as 50 words.

General guidelines

The abstract must address scientific questions, details of observations, or contain primary scientific data. A single study must not be submitted as multiple abstracts. Abstracts that are simply different versions of a single study will be rejected.

All research and studies reported in submitted abstracts that involve human and animal subjects must comply with the guiding principles for experimental procedures found in the Declaration of Helsinki of the World Medical Association and have obtained IRB approval if applicable.

No revisions can be made to the abstract after the abstract submission deadline. The presentation at the meeting must reflect the submitted abstract. In particular, the abstract title, authorship, and scientific content of the presentation at the meeting must match the submitted abstract, although updates and additions on may be added.

All abstracts must be written in English, so that reviewers are able to focus solely on the scientific merits of the submission. We encourage non-English-speaking authors to have their abstracts checked for grammar and spelling prior to submission. It is assumed that the presenting author will have an adequate command of English to present and respond to questions.

Responsibilities

The first author listed for each abstract serves as the presenting author and as the primary contact for all correspondence regarding the abstract unless explicitly specified otherwise. The presenting author must be listed on the submitted abstract.

The presenting author is responsible for ensuring that all authors have read the abstract and poster or presentation, and have agreed to be co-authors. Changes will not be made to the spelling of authors’ names after the submission deadline; please proof your co-authors’ names carefully.

Copyright

The MCS will not hold copyright of any of the submitted abstracts. Authors are free to submit the same or similar abstracts to other meetings. Abstracts that have already been published or submitted elsewhere are still eligible for submission to the MCS.
