Friday Conference: Updates in Microbiome Research, Impact On Human Health
December 20 @ 9:15 am - 10:15 am
M. Andrea Azcarate-Peril, PhD, is professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology and hepatology. She is also the director of the UNC Microbiome Core and an adjunct professor of nutrition. As a microbiologist with extensive experience in bacterial physiology and gut microbes, she has worked on research projects focused on the functional genomics of probiotics and the gut microbiome modulation by prebiotics. Her research aims to explore the impact and mechanisms involved in the beneficial modulation of the gut microbiota by prebiotics and probiotics. She specifically aims to develop prebiotic and probiotic interventions as alternatives to traditional treatments for microbiota-health-related conditions and to advance microbiota-based health surveillance methods. Dr. Azcarate-Peril is passionate about the impact of nutrition and healthy eating on gut microbes and overall health. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles.
