Dr. Stringer is based in Chapel Hill and holds appointments in both the School of Medicine (OBGYN) and the School of Public Health (Epidemiology). Between 2001 and 2012, he lived in Lusaka, Zambia, where he established and led the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ). Stringer’s research focuses on prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission, clinical epidemiology, and obstetrical outcomes. He has served as PI for over $190 million in grant and contract funding for research, training, and clinical work in Africa, and currently holds active grants from the NIH, Seattle Children’s Hospital / Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Stringer is the author of many scientific articles (see PubMed link, below). He now lives in Chapel Hill with his spouse, Dr. Elizabeth Stringer (associate professor of Maternal-Fetal Medicine at UNC), their three children, and an ill-behaved Rhodesian Ridgeback.
