Co-PI and UNC Program Director

Benjamin Chi, professor of ob-gyn at University of North Carolina, is experienced in the conduct of clinical, epidemiologic, and implementation research abroad. He lived full-time in Lusaka, Zambia from 2003 to 2015, where he oversaw a robust research portfolio in perinatal HIV prevention, adult and pediatric HIV treatment outcomes, and women’s health. He has served in multiple local and international leadership roles, and maintains strong collaborative ties with the University of Zambia School of Medicine and the Zambian Ministries of Health and Community Development, Mother-Child Health. He has also led multiple training initiatives, mentoring doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows with a range of topical interests. Having spent more than a decade abroad – developing his own professional career while overseas – Dr. Chi possesses unique insights in global health research training. Now based in Chapel Hill, he works to ensure that our consortium is responsive to trainee needs and provides the necessary support for successful careers in global health research.
