The VISION Study

The VISION study is closed to new enrollments. Thank you to all who joined the study!

We have learned much about COVID-19 but there are still important questions to be answered about who is at risk for infection, how well vaccines and treatments work over time, and Long COVID, among others. That is why we designed the VISION Study.

What Is the VISION Study?

VISION is a new study that will recruit and follow 7,500 people across North Carolina who recently tested positive for COVID-19. If you have tested positive for COVID-19 within the past week you may be eligible to join. If you do join the study, you will complete brief online surveys about your health 8 times over one and a half years, plus a daily online symptom diary for 14 days after joining. If you complete all the online diaries and surveys, you will be financially compensated $105.

Who Can Participate?

You can enter VISION if you are:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Live in NC
  • Tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 7 days – a home test is ok!
  • Able to answer surveys online using a phone or computer

You may also qualify if you have “rebound” symptoms after completing Paxlovid or Molnupiravir to treat COVID-19. If you felt better while taking oral COVID-19 treatment and then your COVID-19 symptoms returned after stopping treatment, you may join the study within 7 days of your symptoms returning.

Is My Participation Only Online?

For most people in VISION, everything will be online including your consent and completing the surveys.

Interested people who live in the Triangle area will be asked to join a sub-study and come to our research center in Chapel Hill 3-4 times for extra COVID-19 related tests including nose swabs and blood draws. Some of these participants will also be asked to go to a LabCorp facility near them about 3 times over a year and a half. Participants who complete each in-person visit are compensated $35 per visit. Participants enrolled in the sub-study can learn how to schedule a LabCorp appointment for their blood draws.
