The Institute offers global health experiences and training for all levels of learners. Meet Merlin, a Gillings student spending his summer practicum with UNC Project Zambia. As the data intern on the PIKABU (Piloting Integration, Knowledge And Acceptability of Baby Ultrasounds) project, he is helping to monitor the rollout of low-cost portable ultrasounds in clinics across the country–supporting Dr. Jeff Stringer‘s work to make pregnancy sonograms more accessible.
“We are at the end of 10+ weeks in Lusaka, Zambia, where I am wrapping up a summer internship with UNC Global Project Zambia’s PIKABU project. While I am looking forward to returning to my wife, cats, and other assorted humans/animals back in the US, I will sincerely miss so much of day-to-day life here in Lusaka. This internship has been an amazing opportunity to experience a new culture, as well as to develop practical skills that will inform my professional trajectory.”
