Matthew-painschab-ascoMatthew Painschab, MD, has been accepted into the 2025-26 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Leadership Development Program. He is one of 16 program participants chosen nationally, to cultivate valuable leadership skills and impact the future of cancer care.

Dr. Painschab is a member of the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases with a primary interest in reducing global cancer disparities through prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer in sub-Saharan Africa, while increasing research capacity through training international and domestic researchers to work globally. Painschab works primarily with UNC Project-Malawi studying HIV-associated malignancies, especially multicentric Castleman disease, lymphoma, and Kaposi sarcoma. He has also been involved in multi-national clinical trials through the AIDS Malignancy Consortium.

Painschab’s global health research experience includes a Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholarship in Puno, Peru (2010-2011), a UJMT Fogarty International Research Fellowship in Malawi (2017-2018), and a Fogarty International Center International Research Scientist Development Award K01 (2019-2024). Critically, his first fully independent research project was funded by the ASCO Global Oncology Young Investigator Award (GO YIA) (2018-2019) and he has served on the ASCO GO YIA selection committee since 2020 including as co-chairperson from 2022 to present.
