parr-nam-scholarJonathan Parr, MD, MPH, associate professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases and member of the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases, has been selected to serve as a National Academy of Medicine (NAM) Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine (ELHM) Scholar for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2025 through June 30, 2028.

Dr. Parr studies the molecular epidemiology of infectious diseases, applying cutting-edge molecular and genomic tools to solve problems faced by marginalized populations across the globe. His work focuses on malaria in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, and other sites, but he also conducts translational studies on viral hepatitis and syphilis. Dr. Parr is a founding member of the UNC Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Ecology Lab (IDEEL).

Each year, the NAM selects 10 exceptional scholars to engage around, and learn from, activities under the umbrella of the NAM, addressing topics that are currently shaping the future of health and medicine.
