UNC’s Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost recently announced recipients of the 2025 University Distinguished Professorships. These honors are awarded to faculty whose scholarly achievements, teaching excellence, and service to the Carolina community exemplify the highest standards. The UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases is pleased to recognize the following, who are members of our global health community.

Stephen Cole, Dirk Dittmer and Jon Juliano

 

Stephen Cole – Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor, Department of Epidemiology, Gillings School of Global Public Health. Dr. Cole is co-director of the Causal Inference Research Laboratory, Associate Director of the Center for AIDS Research Biostatistics Core, Editor of the American Journal of Epidemiology, and Associate Editor for Statistics in Medicine.

Dirk Dittmer– William R. Kenan, Jr. Distinguished Professor, Department of Microbiology & Immunology, School of Medicine. Dr. Dittmer serves as the team lead for Tumor Virology and Global Oncology at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Dittmer founded the UNC Vironomics core which supports clinical trials in the U.S. and globally, including those for SARS-CoV-2 and other emerging viruses.

Jonathan Juliano – Cary C. Boshamer Distinguished Professor, Department of Medicine, School of Medicine. Dr. Juliano is active in the education of medical students, graduate students, residents, and fellows. He is a preceptor in UNC’s Curriculum in Genetics and Molecular Biology, Associate Chief for Research and Professional Development for the UNC Division of Infectious Diseases, and Associate Director of the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and ASTMH, and a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI). Most recently, Dr. Juliano was honored with the prestigious Bailey K. Ashford Medal for distinguished work in tropical medicine.  Read more.
