Sylvia Becker-Dreps, MD, MPH

Sylvia Becker-Dreps, MD, MPH, has been named director of the Office of Global Health Education at the Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases (IGHID) and will begin her work in the role on June 1.

Becker-Dreps has served as the office’s associate director since 2012. She conducts NIH-funded research in Central America, directs the “Nicaraguan Emerging and Endemic Diseases (NEED)” Fogarty D43 Training Program through IGHID, and is an associate professor in the departments of family medicine and epidemiology. Her research focuses on childhood diarrhea and the evaluation of vaccine effectiveness.

As the office’s director, Becker-Dreps will oversee medical student, resident and fellow global health opportunities across disciplines and global health courses in the UNC School of Medicine, coordinate across the School of Medicine and University on global health initiatives, offer career mentorship and more.

The Office of Global Health Education provides global health experiences for students who benefit from years of capacity building and sustained research and scholarship. IGHID is committed to improving health worldwide while building the capacity of thousands of scientists and health professionals globally through educational experiences and training opportunities. Established in 2007, IGHID is the research engine that drives UNC’s global health, serving as a pan-university framework for collaboration and access to research funding.
