Our Programs

“We believe that Carolina can transform the future, with our minds and our willingness to confront the challenges that affect our state, nation, and world.”- UNC Chancellor Holden Thorp

The Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases (IGHID) fosters a collaborative environment in which faculty, students, and the university community partner to find innovative ways to address critical issues in global health and to shape the next generation of global health leaders.

IGHID’s diverse programs and initiatives support the three core missions of the university: research, teaching and service.

Because it draws on expertise across the campus, including all five health affairs schools and the College of Arts & Sciences, the institute is a powerful and effective instrument for integrated, interdisciplinary study and solutions.

Where We Work

The University is active in more than 100 countries worldwide, over half of which involve global health-related projects.

As part of a comprehensive strategy for globalizing the university, UNC leadership has identified Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia (especially China) as target areas for growth. IGHID is focused on building partnerships and programs in these three geographic regions.
