UNC study shows insecticide-treated bed nets reduce infant deaths in Democratic Republic of Congo

September 3, 2009 -- Giving insecticide-treated bed nets to nearly 18,000 mothers at prenatal clinics in the Democratic Republic of Congo prevented an estimated 414 infant deaths from malaria, a study by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill researchers concludes. READ MORE>>

August 24, 2009 -- The Phase III trial of the world’s most clinically advanced malaria vaccine candidate, known as RTS,S, got underway earlier this month in Lilongwe, Malawi. Giving antiretroviral drugs to infants or mothers reduces transmission of HIV through breast milk

July 22, 2009 -- Giving daily antiretroviral syrup to breastfeeding infants or treating their HIV-infected mothers with highly active antiretroviral drugs is safe and effective in preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission through breast milk, a study led by University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill investigators has found. USAID awards $8.5 million to UNC water and sanitation project in Southeast Asia

June 29, 2009 -- A program started at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received an award of up to $8.5 million over five years from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). The funding will help expand a project to bring clean drinking water and improved sanitation and hygiene to homes in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. READ MORE>>

UNC scientists tackle viral issues

June 29, 2009 -- Scientists know that some cancers are triggered by viruses, which take over cellular systems and cause uncontrolled cell growth. Doctors – and patients who get shingles late in life – have also known for many years that some viruses, particularly the herpes virus, can lie dormant in a person’s cells for long periods of time and then reactivate, causing disease. Center for AIDS Research announces eight recipients of developmental awards

June 25, 2009 -- The UNC Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) has awarded eight investigators with 2009 Developmental Awards. The CFAR Developmental Core provides small awards (typically up to $20,000) for one year for HIV research. The awards are given to established HIV researchers to pursue new avenues, junior investigators and investigators new to HIV research.

UNC's first Doris Duke International Fellows return from China and Malawi

June 10, 2009 -- Three medical students, including one from UNC-Chapel Hill, have recently returned from a year of clinical research in China and Malawi. The three are the first to be awarded UNC’s Doris Duke International Clinical Research Fellowship (ICRF). READ MORE>>

UNC Project-Malawi honors beloved former lab director with new center

June 9, 2009 -- UNC has just opened a new malaria vaccine research center at the Area 18 Health Center in Lilongwe, Malawi and named it the George Joaki Centre.
